artSBridge Spring 2017

We have a fantastic programme of events lined up throughout May for children, families and young people. And all of it FREE! This year we have an international theme. Come along and try something new this May.


Exhibitions:  

We are proud to host exhibitions from:

Creative Learning & Pye Nest Nursery at Hollins Mill

Ryburn Valley High School at Calderdale Chiropractic from 1st May and Tesco Foyer from 12th May

We will also be hosting an exhibition of  children’s art and poetry on the theme of “If not here, then where?” which will run until the end of the festival. If you wish your child to contribute to this (all primary aged children welcome), please drop your work off at any of our venues. Triangle C of E primary  school has done some fantastic work on this topic which will be displayed together

Come along to the first event of our Spring family festival and learn to dance around a maypole. With craft tent and storytelling based around May Day/Beltane/Walpurgis from around Europe. Come bedecked in flowers and bring armfuls of sunshine

Printmaking

Design and print your very own flag using recycled materials and colourful inks! Explore flags from around the world to inspire your design and experiment with various textured materials to make a collage that can be used to print a repeating pattern.Come and celebrate Print Day in May -an international celebration of printmakers –  with us.flags

Samba – Dance

Samba drumming

Followed by a drumming workshop. Come and learn the basics of Samba drumming. Bring your own drums or  drums will be provided.  All welcome, young and old. With a combined dance & drumming finale!

The Mighty Zulu Nation

An exciting opportunity to enjoy a fun, interactive and educational performance and workshop. Learn the dances of the Sangoma, Zulu Maiden and Zulu Warrior, in addition to traditional Zulu songs. The performance will be at 2pm and two workshops will follow at 2.50pm & 3.30pm

Musical Loops

Combining electronics and percussive instruments we will collaborate to create a series of loopy tunes to build up interesting textures and melodies. Instruments will be provided but participants are welcome to bring their own.

Aboriginal Workshops 

Old Fire Station, Hollins Mill Lane, Sowerby Bridge

Make a  decorated handprint chalk drawing. Bring along a stone, people or rock and decorate with symbols. Bring along some kitchen roll tubes and turn them into a decorative rainstick. Create an authentic looking wall hanging inspired by bark paintings. Working on both group pieces and individual pieces.

Celebrating World Day for Cultural Diversity, we have invited the Arte Libre group from Halifax to lead some community workshops. Part of a collaboration between Refugee Week Halifax and The Artworks, Arte Libre works to celebrate migration through art and culture.  Here, refugees from a range of different nations will share the skills they have learned in  this series of diverse and exciting art & craft workshops. drop-in workshop

Amoeba to Zebra is a very special musical exploration of the natural history of the Earth devised and performed by established Yorkshire-based pop group, BEING 747.

Charting the development of all living things from the origins of the most basic organisms in the primordial soup right through to the sophistication of mankind, this show is intended to inspire students to take an interest in Biology and the environment and elaborate on their studies through the medium of pop music. Suitable for all ages

We invite the audience to come dressed in their favorite animal costumes, onesies, masks, face paintings etc.
